52 Weeks 52 Tests - Week 7 - Leather craft

Week 7 of the year, and 7th new experiment.
After 2 months of challenge, I can already feel that I am now always looking forward for the week ahead with a sense of excitement! On top of that, some of you readers, friends and strangers have been telling me that my "quest" is interesting and inspiring... So, Thank you, and you can be sure I will carry on :)

This week I tried crafting leather. Yes, LEATHER, that noble fabric that evokes style, durability, and, well, craftsmanship...
I booked a beginner class with Atelier Lodge, a training structure based in the cool 'hood of Arab Street / Haji Lane.
Bali lane, Singapore

The class was to last 3 hours of hands-on practice, guided by a professional trainer, to try and make a leather card holder.

After a few security instructions and explanation about the tools and how the session was going to roll, we were given a toolbox and templates of the right shapes and sizes for the card holder.

We would have to draw on leather, cut the different parts, and then fork them, glue them, and stitch them together into the final product. Hands-on baby!

First, we learned the basics of leather cutting with a pen knife and a ruler.

Then, moving on with the preparation of the parts, we also learned to groove the pieces, to score them, and to varnish their edges.

As you can see below, we were not too many in the class. Thus every one could go at its own rhythm, and coach Fabian did an admirable job helping each student through the creation.

At the Atelier

I can totally see why leather craft is not an easy one. Whilst I was very focused, had slept enough for this morning class, and was working with a very forgiving leather (water buffalo), I made many mistakes: over-shot while cutting, put too much glue and as a consequence lost a lot of time and energy to pass the needle through, and more... I did not find the various moves difficult in themselves, but practice makes perfect, probably in the range of 10,000 hours...

Halfway there! Hand stitching

So after a few corrections from the instructor, and 3 hours + of work, the finished product was there in my hands, with pride!

Ta Da! Handmade card holder!

I am very proud of this object, and what's more, I already loved it in its making. The touch of leather, the special tools, every thing about this learning experience was awesome. I will be back for more learning!

Especially, and that is the very sad, stupid, annoying part of the story: I lost the card holder the same day, probably at The Gathering festival where I went straight after the leather class... There were business cards inside the holder, so if you found my work of love and read this, please show some compassion, and return it to me! I'll buy you a beer!... So pissed with myself about it...

The Gathering was an awesome festival, though, at Fort Canning park which is probably the best venue in town for such events. This year showed an impressive line up for Singapore (no offense to the bands touring here, but we rarely get to see the cream of the cream of upcoming indie music...).
Three of them even are on my list of the best albums from 2014...
We are getting better and better cultural content in Singapore, and that's an excellent thing!

Belle and Sebastian
Real Estate

I do not have good pictures of Temples, but they delivered a good performance, although lacking in communication with the public.
Same for TuNe YaRdS who is a great band, with crazy experimentation that they manage to pull together into a consisitent sound, which sounds like nothing else!

But the highlight of the festival was assuredly Caribou, who set the park on fire...

I could even shake these guys hands and get my CD signed :)

Now, what's on for next week in my 52 Weeks 52 Trials challenge? I am not sure yet, but I have a Wunderlist long enough to not lack inspiration! So, stay tuned & keep testing new stuff!

Check out what I did in week 8

52 Weeks 52 Tests - Week 7 - Hypnotherapy (Part 1)

As a western kid, and one from the nation of Pasteur, I have been loaded with antibiotics in my youth, for all sorts of conditions. I deeply believe that whilst it may have saved me from certain complications, it has also left certain fragility in my organism.

Like many people I don't like going to doctors and rather prefer not to fall sick in the first place. Over the years, I have therefore observed what works and what does not in my lifestyle. Besides paying more attention to what I eat, I have developed an interest in alternative medicines, yet have not tried anything at all, besides maybe, diffusing some essential oils in my flat...

It is only natural then that some of these medicines make it to my #52W52T challenge!

This week, I had a first consultation with Nisha Jhiangani, from Mind Wellness, about an hypnotherapy treatment. I have been fascinated with hypnosis for a long time, and recently my business school friend Mustafa turned into HypnoMus and stopped auditing for KPMG to dedicate himself to his passion, and now performing comedy hypnosis shows on stage in Colombia. One more reason to pick my interest and get started, somehow...I guess...

Nisha asked for the main reason for me coming to see her, and so (besides the sheer pleasure of experimenting) I named "stopping my casual smoking completely" as a pressing concern, which also one of my objectives for 2015. I also mentioned excessive blushing / sweating in social presentation contexts as another pressing concern. I'm probably going to focus on that as I sense that there are somatic causes to this that would make for a most interesting treatment topic.

Nisha ran me through the hows and whys of hypnosis, highlighting that:
  • contrary to misconceptions, we all experience hypnosis regularly, like for instance when we are so focused and immersed into driving that we eventually miss a turn.
This video helps to understand more about how hypnosis leverages the subconscious minds to make suggestions.

She also highlighted the following:
  • hypnosis aims at treating the root causes (the immersed part of the iceberg whose emerged part are the symptoms.
  • hypnosis is not psychotherapy, and one has to come with a serious problem it really wants to solve for seeing a chance of success.
  • Patient keep control during an hypnosis session
  • It is better not to over-analyse what was said during the session so as to maximize the power of suggestions (how to write a post without hypnotherapy if I can't analyze :@)
Anyway, I signed in for a package of 5 sessions, which is the recommended time to solve typical problems... It is pretty expensive, but to solve a really annoying personal issue, I don't mind!
At this point, I am pretty excited for my first consultation that will happen tomorrow.

Stay tuned for my first impressions, coming soon in Hypnotherapy (part 2)!

************** Update from February 12th **************

So, I had my first therapy session yesterday...
I was reminded that it is better not to analyze what happened during the session and let the effects sink in for better long term results. All I can tell you is that it was quite an experience to go through...

As a consequence, I won't tell you much at this stage, and Part 2 will come later this year then, when all sessions are behind me and a cold headed assessment can be made.

In the mean time, let Pharrell close your eyes and let him hypnotize you, he will make your storm feel sky blue.

See you soon for Week 8

52 Weeks 52 Tests - Week 5 - Dragonboating with the Germans

I was going to fall a bit short of inspiration for what to try for this 5th week of the year, but luckily Zohria came up with the idea of going dragon boating on the Kallang river with the German Dragons

The introduction to the activity started with a solid warm-up: stretches, 100 jumping jacks, 50 push-ups with 5 seconds plank in between series of 10, and some stretches...

Ze German dragons
The whole group was then split between first timers, a-few-timers, and the more experienced members.
Our coach for this first session was a tiny Singaporean girl, that did her best to instill a good spirit in the group of newbies that we were, giving some background about buildings by the river and cracking a few jokes, sometimes not on even on purpose (calling 2 girls named Jill sitting on the same row "the Jews" and then asking the "pure Germans" to give their best effort - weirdly funny on a German boat...). She did an excellent job though in bringing everyone together and have us give our best paddling, especially by coordinating our group counting: "1,up! 2, up! 3, up!..."

After a few back and forth on the river between the National Stadium and the Marina Bay Area, we headed back to the boat garage, for some out stretching, speeches of the club's managers, and then were offered some Paulaner beer to chill by the river!

Singapore daytime pictures often look gloomy, yet, sun was pounding, I can tell you that!

All together, it was a nice way to be out and do some activity in the sun, over water!
I might even go again this Saturday :)

Other Test of the week: Haribo Super Piratos

I am quite big on sweets, and I know Haribo fairly well, yet I had never heard of Super Piratos.
Oh, wait, maybe because it is a bit of danish thing. My friend Nina brought this from her country for me to sample. So, I had one this morning. I almost fell to the ground. Not because it's good.
It is super salty! It is licorice, and it's bloody salty, almost sparkling salty! Ahhhhh, oh can salty sweets even exist?
Well, that really blew my mind, so I guess it was worth experimenting. I might try another one tonight again.

See my next experiment: #52W52T, Week 6: Hypnotherapy (part 1)
